So, how gay must a gay bar be?

Despite their best journalistic efforts, the New York Times fails to answer the question, how gay must a gay bar be? On any given Saturday night in West Hollywood’s historic Boystown, the question becomes important to ponder.  I do not have an answer either but have some metrics and considerations to throw out there: Numbers: There is a critical mass somewhere between 60-80% of clientele that makes a place seem authentic to its identity.  Massing: Are all the straight girls huddling together in a group or are they with actual gay friends? That makes a difference.  Behavior: The percentage of gay/straight...

The Abbey gets NY Times Close-Up

West Hollywood’s world-famous Abbey just got a little more famous by featuring in the New York Times Magazine‘s Pride edition as the Gray Lady asks, how gay does a bar have to be to be gay? “My older gay clientele were saying, ‘Gosh, there are so many straight people in here,’” said David Cooley, the bar’s owner. “My argument was, we’ve been fighting for equality for all these years. What’s in store for Circus of Books?

Earlier this week, WeHo Times broke news that long-time West Hollywood business Circus of Books would be shuttering its doors.  Given how market conditions for retail in general, let alone specialty retail as such, have changed, this should come as no surprise.  So what’s in store for the property? The building that houses Circus of Books is one of the original mixed-use properties, with small housing units on the upper floors in back. If there were any thoughts of redeveloping the property, then they’d Ave to use the Ellis Act to evict these tenants, which would be costly and...
